Almost Alaska!

So we took this side trip off the Cassiar Highway to go to Stewart, British Columbia and Hyder, Alaska.

The Cassiar highway...About 60 percent of it is now paved. The gravel parts of it are horrible...dips, potholes, no guard rails, road breaking off in chunks around the tightest of bends, washboard, one of the worst roads you could imagine...

Anyway, Stewart was a cute little place with a "grand" hotel, laundromat and 2 grocery stores. The campground was pretty nice...called "Rainey Creek"...the trees were hundreds of feet high (or so it seemed...) and this place was the first location that we really got the feeling of being up north, when 10 PM came and it was still light out! The side trip to Hyder, Alaska was just a quick day trip...Hyder's population was under 100 people so not much to do there...but we took the "salmon glacier" road and had a nice trip up the mountain, stopping along the way to look for bears in Fish Creek.
They go there to pull out the salmon that swims up the stream by the thousands...however, we were about 3 weeks too early for them so we didn't see any.

More blue water...

The ride up the mountain to Salmon Glacier was to say the least...harrowing! It started getting cold and rainy, misty and foggy and we thought it was going to start snowing any moment! And the turns were tight, the dropoffs steep.

The stay in Stewart included doing the laundry...on the way out of town we stopped along Portland Canal at Bear Glacier to take some pictures of the glacier - it's too bad we can't post sounds (or at least I don't know how to do that yet...) you can hear the meltwater rushing out under the glacier into the Bear River.

The next post will have some photos of the trip through Hyder and Bear glacier...
